In 1997, Rick Simpson was an engineer working in a hospital in Canada. Simpson was working in the boiler room located in the hospital. He was covering the asbestos located on the hospital’s pipes with aerosl glue. Due to lack of ventilation in the boiler room and the accumulation of toxic fumes, Simpson’s nervous system went into a state of shock. This prompted him to fall off his ladder and hit his ladder. Upon awakening, he was rushed to the emergency room.

From then on, Simpson began to suffer from severe dizzy spells and a continuing ringing in his ears. The medication he was prescribed ended up doing very little to help his symptoms.

Simpson became aware of the benefits of cannabis after seeing a documentary on the subject. He then inquired to his doctor about using medical cannabis to help treat his recurring symptoms, but the doctor refused to prescribe this course of treatment. Simpson then went on to obtain cannabis of his own accord, thus seeing a tremendous improvement of his symptoms.

It was in 2003 when Simpson was diagnosed with cancer. He had three bumps on his arm which turned out to be a form of skin cancer. With his great experience with using cannabis in the past and reading research articles, Simpson made the decision to treat his skin cancer topically, using a form of concentrated cannabis oil. He would cover the spots with the oil and leave them bandaged for several days.

After waiting those several days, Simpson removed his bandages only to reveal that the cancerous spots had disappeared. It was at this point, that Simpson made the decision to cultivate his own cannabis. He harvested the plants himself to create his own form of cannabis oil. This oil is now known as Rick Simpson Oil, or Phoenix Tears. With his oil, Simpson was able to help treat more than 5,000 patients.

Simpson’s journey was faced with many trials and tribulations. He was arrested and persecuted and his home was raided on multiple occasions.. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police cut down and confiscated many of his plants. This didn’t deter Simpson to continue to persevere and share his oil with the world. He continues to share his findings and the positive benefits of cannabis oil to this day.

  • A deep bowl
  • Spoon for stirring
  • Cheesecloth
  • Rice cooker

  1. Put the dried cannabis material into the 5-gallon bucket. Pour the solvent into the bucket until the plant matter is covered.
  2. When pouring in the solvent continue to stir and crush the cannabis material with the spoon. Continually stir the mixture for approximately three minutes to allow the THC to dissolve into the solvent. This process will dissolve about 80% of the THC into the solvent.
  3. Using the cheesecloth, strain the cannabis material from the solvent into a bowl. Take the strained cannabis material and put it back into the bucket and add more solvent. Continue stirring for another three minutes.
