Hash or hashish is among the most popular weed concentrates in Canada. This is because it is highly versatile and welcoming, even for new smokers. However, if you’ve no experience with hashish, it can be a little tricky to get the most out of it.

But don’t you worry. Even if you’ve zero experience, we’ll not only guide you on how to smoke hash but also tell you the best ways to smoke hash as per your needs.

However, before jumping into the ways to experience hash, it’s best to understand what it is. Respect the substance, you know?

What is Hash?

A Guide to Smoke Hash Better than Indian Sages

In short, it is a form of cannabis concentrate consisting of kief, which are crystal-like substances found at the head of the plant’s trichomes. Using different methods (we’ll discuss these below), it is formed into a brick, ball, or block.

If you’re wondering why not just smoke the flower, it is because concentrating the flower isolates the cannabinoids and terpenes, resulting in a  potent high and increased THC levels.

Depending on how the hash was made, its colour ranges from light amber to dark brown and everything in between.

Types of Hash (How It’s Made)

The type of hash is determined by how it was made and processed. These are all the methods to produce hashish:

Dry Sift:

image13

This is a traditional and quite straightforward method of producing hash. In this, trichomes are mechanically separated using screens or hash shakers.

Professionals usually freeze the cannabis plant material before processing so that trichomes come off easily. Next, they place the weed flowers (along with trimmings if you have them) in a hash shaker and move it from side to side while gently pressing on it.

Finally, they remove the plant material and scrap off the powder also known as kief, using a card or scrapper, and pressing it to form hash.

It is golden amber to slightly yellowish in colour.

Ice Water or Bubble Method:

While this one may seem like a complex method to produce hashish, it is fairly straightforward. All you need is a bucket, silk screens (with different filter sizes), ice, filtered water, cannabis (of course), and a large spoon or stick to stir.

Begin by layering the bucket with silk screens, from thinnest to widest filter size. Then, fill the first filter bag halfway with dried weed and ice. Pour water to cover the ice and weed mixture, and then gently begin stirring it for about 15-20 minutes.

Once done, add the mixture to the next filter screen and repeat until you reach the final silk screen.

At the end, you’ll be left with creamy but wet hash. To remove excess water, simply press it in between cheese cloth and that’s it! Now, you will have a ready-to-use brown hash.

Rosin:

While there are two different methods to produce rosin: hot and cold pressed, we are going to be focusing on the hot pressed method.

For this, simply follow the same steps as the dry sift method.  Once you’ve the powder, put it in a heat-safe wrap or rosin bag and press it using a manual or pneumatic rosin press.

The ideal temperature range to produce high-quality rosin is 104-121 °C.

Hot Pressed vs Cold Pressed Rosin:

Factor Cold Pressed Rosin Hot Pressed Rosin
Temperature  71-88 °C 104-121 °C
Consistency Softer, with a butter or batter-like texture Typically sappy or shatter-like
Yield Lower yield Higher yield
Terpene Retention Higher terpene retention, more flavorful Some terpene loss due to higher temperatures
Colour Pale yellow in colour Yellow-brownish in colour
Ideal Use When flavour and terpene profiles are prioritized When higher yield and potency are prioritized
Pressing Duration Longer press time Shorter press time

Charas (Hand-rubbed):

This is the ancient way of making hash. In fact, people in India have been producing charas like this for thousands of years.

For this, all you need to do is rub weed (preferably fresh) within your palms vigorously. Soon, you’ll see trichomes sticking to your palms. Simply scrap the residue off your hands and form the hash into whatever shape you prefer.

Charas is usually dark brown or black in colour.

  7. Inhale and try not to burn yourself.

Car Cigarette Lighter

Okay, why are you even in this situation in the first place? Well, even if you are, we highly recommend you don’t light up your hash in the car. This is because you can end up in prison or, at the very least, get fined due to the cannabis laws in Canada. Did we mention how dangerous it is?

Additional Tips

Now, you can pick and choose your ideal hash-smoking method. While that’s all there is to, here are some additional tips to help you advance further in your hash journey.

How to Test the Quality of Hash

If you’re ordering from a reputed store like The Green Ace, then you don’t have to worry about the quality because we deliver the best cannabis products.

There are different ways to check the quality of your hashish; however, all vary depending on the type of hash you’re working with.

How to Check the Quality of Dry Sift

Appearance: Golden amber

Texture: Sand-like (soft-pressed) and Hard (heavy-pressed)

How to Check: When you cut it open, it should feel soft and warm on the inside.

How to Check the Quality of Ice Water or Bubble Hash

Appearance: Light brown to brown

Texture: Soft but sticky

How to Check: It should feel soft to the touch. If it’s hard that means more trimmings were used in the process.

How to Check the Quality of Rosin

Appearance: Pale yellow (cold-pressed) and yellow-brownish (hot-pressed)

Texture: Butter-like texture (cold-pressed) and sappy or shatter-like (hot-pressed)

How to Check: Rosin is a bit of an odd one, as different temperatures and processes can result in significantly different appearing hash, but all produce the desired results.

How to Check the Quality of Charas

Appearance: Dark brown to black

Texture: Smooth and slightly sticky

How to Check: If the hash is overly sticky when it’s cold, additional oils were added to increase the heft. Also, if you see white mold, it wasn’t cured correctly.

How to Preserve Your Hash

If you’ve bought yourself a large stash of hashish, then you’d want to keep it for later use. Therefore, it is crucial to know how to preserve it. Here’s how to store your hashish properly.

Materials Required

  • Parchment Paper

Instructions

  1. Line your container with parchment paper.

  3. Store it at a cool temperature (15 °C to 20 °C), away from direct sunlight.

Hash Edibles

Now, chances are that you’re a cannabis enthusiast; however, due to a medical condition or sheer choice, you do not smoke. So, is this the end of your hash journey?

Not at all! You can always opt for hash edibles. Here’s a simple way to make your own hash butter.

  • 100 grams butter (salt-free)
  • 500ml water
  • 5 grams of dry, decarboxylated hash
How to Decarb Hash?

  1. Break your hash into small pieces.
  2. Add it to a glass container with a heat-proof lid.
  3. Bake it for 40 minutes at 110 ºC.
  4. Let the container cool completely before opening.

Equipment

  • Measuring scale
  • Large pot
  • Whisk
  • Heat-proof airtight container with lid

Instructions

  1. Bring the water to a simmer (not boil).
  2. Add butter to the simmering water and stir until it is completely melted.
  3. Add decarboxylated hash to the mix.
  4. Let the mixture simmer for 1-3 hours until the mixture is at least halved (you can reduce it further to create a more potent butter; however, don’t let the butter burn).
  5. Now, pour it into a container and store it in the fridge overnight.
  6. The next day, the butter will be separated from the water.
Simply scoop out the hash butter, and that’s it.

You can eat it as it is or bake delicious hash edibles with it.
