What is an ounce of weed?

An ounce of weed is basically a specific amount of weed. When you say ounce, you mean 28 grams or 1/16th of a pound. An ounce of cannabis is a common measurement used by consumers and sellers, and it is also one of the most common amounts of weed purchased at a single time. Why is that? Simple.

Because, most people believe buying a gram or a quart is too small. So they buy an ounce (basically 28 grams). When you do this, you also get the benefits of discounted rates. The more you buy in one go, the cheaper each gram becomes.

Now that you know what an ounce of weed is, let’s get straight into how much an ounce of weed is (in terms of weight, measurements, and price)!

But first, why do people even ask this question so frequently?

Why do people want to know how much an ounce of weed costs?

There are so many reasons why people may want to know the cost of an ounce of weed. For one, it helps them budget their money, and helps compare different types of weed ounces, based on their price and quality. Knowing the current market value of an ounce of marijuana can also prevent them from getting ripped off or overcharged by dodgy sellers. And on top of that, being well aware of the cost of an ounce of weed can help you make informed decisions about whether it is more cost-effective to buy in bulk today or not. Lastly, a lot of people surprisingly don’t know how many grams there are in an ounce, and there is no shame in asking!

What are the factors that affect the price of an ounce of weed?

There are a multitude of factors that affect the price of an ounce of weed, including:

Quality

The quality of the weed is one of the biggest factors that affect its price. Higher quality weed is more expensive than lower quality weed and there’s a good reason for that (unless of course you’re buying from a family member, where you can potentially score really good quality weed for a family rate haha)! “Legal cannabis products must meet the requirements of the Cannabis Act and its regulations, which set out rules for product quality, promotion, packaging and labelling”, explains the Canadian Government. To give you an example, you can buy a cheap ounce of “bush” weed from your local shady dealer for as little as $50. However, if you want some high-quality Kush weed from some of the best growers in the world, it’ll probably cost you upwards of $300! The experience and high is all worth the larger price tag – trust me!

Location

The price of weed can be affected based on where you are located. In areas where it is legal, the price tends to be lower, while in areas where it is illegal, the price tends to be higher. For example, weed is illegal in Australia, hence the only the people that sell them are shady street dealers, and they sell you low quality stuff for premium price tags. Ridiculous. On the other hand, in countries like Canada, where it’s legal, you can get the best quality weed for average prices. Best of all, you don’t even have to go to the dark sketchy alley at the corner to find a dealer. It’s all sold online and delivered to your doorstep (discretely of course). Win-win situation for you Canadians!

Availability

The availability of weed can also affect its price. If there is a shortage of weed in a particular area, the price may go up. For example, there has been many times in history where there was a shortage of weed – people just couldn’t grow it as effectively, and as a result, the price went up like crazy. Luckily, as of 2023, we haven’t seen shortages in years!

Supply and demand

As with any product, the laws of supply and demand also apply to weed. If there is a high demand for weed and a limited supply, the price will have to go up – we’ve experienced this in nearly every industry for most of our lives. For example, in the housing market, if there’s too many buyers, and not enough sellers, the sellers will up their prices and it’ll weed out all of the buyers that don’t have a high enough budget, and will leave the few buyers that are willing to pay top dollar. Luckily, when it comes to supply and demand, things can also be positive for buyers of weed. For example, if there are too many sellers (usually evident in a country that marijuana is legal) and not enough buyers, the sellers will basically compete with each other for the buyers. They do this by losing profits and offering their top quality weed for more affordable rates. Win-win situation again for the buyers!

Seasonality

The price of weed can also be impacted based on the time of year. For example, prices may be higher during the winter months when it is more difficult to grow weed outdoors. A lot of the growers depend on outdoor growing to be able to keep up with the high demand for marijuana in Canada. So when the weather simply doesn’t let them grow it quick enough, the stock becomes limited, and this is where the supply and demand principles come into play. “Cannabis prices in Canada vary according to season (p<.001), with prices highest in Summer (median: $7.46), as compared to the prices reported for Spring, Fall, and Winter (all report a median price of $7.04)”, see the reference to this data at the Public Safety Canada website.

Packaging and branding

The way in which the weed is packaged and branded can also affect its price. Some brands may charge more for their product based on their reputation and branding. This is not unique to the weed industry – this is evident with everything. For example, you want to buy a new T-Shirt for working out, and you choose to buy the $40 Nike T-Shirt over the basic $10 T-Shirt you can get at your local corner store. They are the same T-Shirts, just one is branded and packaged nicer. Branding and packaging definitely does impact price, regardless of the product quality.

As you can see, the price of an ounce of weed can vary and is greatly impacted depending on the above factors, alongside many more (which I just don’t have the time to dive into right now – we’ll save that for another day).

In short, I’m not telling you all of this for no reason. I’m trying to help you understand that it’s super important to keep these factors in mind when going out and buying an ounce of weed.

How much is an ounce of weed, in terms of price?

The price of an ounce of weed varies greatly depending on a number of factors, such as the quality, the location of the seller, and the legality of weed in your area. However, on average, assuming weed is legal in your area and you’re buying it from a trusted source, an ounce of weed can cost anywhere from $100 to $300. In other areas where marijuana is legal, the price may be even higher due to tax and regulation laws. For this reason, it’s always a good idea to do research and check with local dispensaries or dealers for an idea on current market prices in your area.

How much is an ounce of weed, in terms of grams and pounds?

An ounce of weed weighs approximately 28 grams or 0.0625 pounds (depending on which country and ounce variant you’re referring to).

Explanation of the weight of an ounce of weed

An ounce of weed is a unit of measurement commonly used in the cannabis industry to refer to 28 grams of marijuana. The reason it’s specifically 28 grams is because an ounce is equivalent to 28 grams or 1/16th of a pound. In terms of visualizing the weight of an ounce of weed, it is roughly equivalent to a small bag of chips or a medium-sized apple. But of course, this is dependant on whether or not the weed is super compressed or not. The more compressed it is, the smaller the visual appearance will be (don’t worry, you will still get the same amount of weed out of it – it expands as you chop it up)!

It’s important to note that the weight of an ounce of weed can vary depending on factors such as the strain, how densely the buds are packed, and the humidity level. This can result in slight variations in weight, but the standard weight of an ounce of weed is 28 grams.

PRO TIP: One of the main reasons why I like to buy from trusted online dispensaries over the local street dealer is because of a study I did in 2020. I went around and asked 30 street dealers if they water up their weed. My overall findings were that if you’re a street dealer and you don’t make your weed heavier by adding water to it, then you’re just wasting profits.

How do street dealers make their weed heavier with water? Good question!

It’s as simple as putting 20 grams of weed into a small plastic container with two slices of bread inside of it. Leave it overnight (making sure that it is closed properly, not allowing the humidity from the bread slices to leave the container. The next morning, simply get your weed and weigh it, it would have soaked up the humidity from the bread, and that 20 grams of weed would probably be 25-28 grams of weed. And then they go and sell people this? Biggest rip off. But I see why they do it. It doesn’t take a genius to do this, and the sacrifice is just two slices of bread. Hell, they’ll probably still eat those two slices of bread! Do not buy from street dealers, I repeat, do not buy from street dealers.

Conversion of ounces to grams, kilograms, and pounds

  • 1 ounce = 28.35 grams
  • 1 ounce = 0.02835 kilograms
  • 1 ounce = 0.0625 pounds

So if you have an ounce of weed, it would weigh approximately 28.35 grams, 0.02835 kilograms, or 0.0625 pounds. It’s important to note that these are approximations and the exact weight may vary slightly – like c’mon, these are extremely specific, right?

Where to buy an ounce of weed

If you feel informed enough now and you’re looking to buy an ounce of weed, you have a few options to consider. Here are some of the most common places to purchase an ounce of weed:

Dispensaries

In areas where marijuana is legal, dispensaries are a very common option for buying weed in small or big amounts. Dispensaries are basically a shop-front where you can go and buy the exact amount of weed you want. They also have heaps of different types of weed, so make sure to ask the staff your questions – they are usually very experienced in the types of strains they have to offer and can help you choose the right weed for you that you’re looking for. However, prices for weed at dispensaries are usually much higher than other options.

Street dealers

While buying from a street dealer can be cheaper than a dispensary, it is illegal and can be risky. Quality and safety of the weed may also be questionable and the government recommends you do not risk this.

Online

Online marketplaces and delivery services are becoming more popular for purchasing grams, ounces, and even pounds of weed. This option offers the convenience of shopping from home, a wide selection of strains, usually from the lowest quality all the way to the best of the best, and often lower prices than dispensaries. However, you need to make sure you’re buying from a reputable and legal source. Here’s the one I recommend if you live in Canada (yes, the one I work for).

Pros and cons of the above options

Cannabis dispensaries offer legal, high-quality weed, but they are usually very expensive. Street dealers may be cheaper, but they’re illegal and extremely risky (you never know what they’ve put in your weed). Online options are convenient and much cheaper than dispensaries, but there is a risk of buying from an unverified source.

Advice for buying an ounce of cannabis safely and legally

Make sure you’re buying from a reputable and legal online source, whether it’s a dispensary or an online marketplace. Like always, it’s extremely important that you check reviews and do thorough research before buying anything on the internet. Always follow local laws and regulations, and make sure to verify the quality and safety of the weed before consuming. Do this by asking many questions!

Conclusion

In conclusion, understanding the measurements, weight, and costs of an ounce of weed is very important for anyone who consumes or plans to consume marijuana. In this article, I’ve covered the basics of what an ounce of weed is, the factors that affect its price, how much it usually costs, how much it weighs, and where you can and should buy it from. Remember that the quality and strain of the weed, as well as your location and the seller you choose, can significantly impact the price (and potentially the amount you receive). It’s essential to weigh the pros and cons of each buying option and ensure that you’re purchasing safely and legally (again, go for online marketplaces – thank me later)!
